A Pedant Writes... In fact the second woman did not refer to her friend by name, a point which I think makes an important degree of difference. Her tone was reflective as in "Yes [I take your point, and I am processing an opinion about it] but what about the garden" Whereas "Yes Agnes" seems to imply a dismissive tone to the exchange. This was not the case.
