Israel Kirzner on the importance of good economics
Fred Sautet provides a transcript of Israel Kirzner's acceptance speech, for his lifetime acheievement award at the 2006 SDAE annual dinner.
Economics is not an intellectual game. Economics is deadly serious. The very future of mankind—of civilization—depends ... upon [the] widespread understanding of, and respect for, the principles of economics.
I've never felt more inspired or humbled than during Prof Kirzner's speech. He's a master orator, producing a powerful message with heart and wit, and it should also be noted that Pete Boettke's introduction was incredibly eloquent and fitting. The award was a tremendous demonstration of the intellectual values and methods that deserve to be guarded fiercely.

Game? I thought it was all footnotes to Smith and Ricardo. No?
