I've been playing around with the World Development Indicators at the World Bank, and find these charts interesting. The first is child mortality (per 1,000) and the second is life expectancy (years). I've compared 1990 to 2006 and there's clearly big changes. "Free", "partially free" and "not free" come from Freedom House 2006.
And whilst I'm at it, here are some images of the Soviet Union from marxists.org.
