My favourite Christmas present this year, from Faith, was a replica Superlambanana (above). When Taro Chiezo's original arrived in Liverpool in 1998 as part of Art Transpenine, it was met with the sort of reaction one might expect from today's post-Emin audience - a lethargic, communal and sarcastic 'cheers'. The sculpture was moved from the prominant city centre location of Williamson square due to graffiti, and now resides next to the excellent Baltic Fleet Pub, on the banks of the Mersey.
Indeed most people who see the little chap think how ridiculous it is. The meaning, however, is wonderful. Aside from the GM scare-mongering connotations (anyone who thinks cross breeding is a modern phenomena should read 'The Winter's Tale',) it is inherently reflective of the city it graces. When the Liverpool Docks were at their busiest, they were principally importing bananas, and exporting wool.
Striking art, with a succint meaning.
