only Everton have spent more seasons in the top division.
But Everton fans will feel a little aggrieved at their position just below Leeds United and Villa, given that they are the only club to pass the century of seasons among the elite and are second only to their neighbours, Liverpool, in the points tally. Nor is Everton’s status purely a product of longevity — with nine titles, they outstrip all but the big three in what is surely the most important measure of success

I plead ignorance: why this "toffee" thing?

Because we're the People's Club.

Sorry, my question was badly phrased. Why is the word "toffee" used in allusions to Everton F.C.? Or am I missing a joke: is it to do with "toff"?

A sweetshop that used to be near the stadium would send a girl out at halftime to throw free toffees into the crowd. The tradition continues today - in a similar way to being the mascot at every home game a girl is chosen to be "the toffeelady" and she dresses up and gives out free sweets. I've never got one though.

Ah, as at the pantomime. I suppose Liverpool supporters must say that a lot?

Well she only comes on before the game or at half time, so if you were in Norway watching on Sky you probably wouldn't notice.
