Graham Poll could be handing out a yellow card or three on Saturday. What are your thoughts on his selection?
anthonyjevans: NIGHTMARE!!
That's my response to red shite Tim Kelly - see the full conversation (and responses from Liverpool fans) at Red and White Kop. So what's the problem with Poll? Well there's several, but the one that comes straight to mind, the one that really hurts, is this infamous decision.
To recap, it's an evening game, at Goodison, we're into injury time at 0-0, and it's a Liverpool free kick. Goalkeeper Sander Westerveld takes it quickly, it hits the back of Don Hutchison (my favourite player at the time) and goes in - 1-0!! A winner!!
Alas no, Poll disallows the goal, and the pub rages. I claim it should have counted, my mates said it shouldn't - Hutchison wasn't 10-yards away. I say that doesn't matter, since he was walking away from the ball so it wasn't interference. Although I knew I had the rules right, I could see where they were coming from... but I was stunned when Poll later defended his decision by claiming that he didn't disallow if for encroachment, it was because he'd blown for full time.
But he hadn't blown his whistle! And there was at least 15 seconds left in the game!
Poll bottled it, and then retrospectively justified it with a lie. He has a tendency to act like a clown, but that took the biscuit.
A few months ago (just after the World Cup) I went up Scarfell Pike with my Dad and brother, and on the way back down guess who who passed on his way up? Graham Poll! He should have booked us for dissent.
Why is it that, in football arguments, no-one ever cites the bloody rule? Please, put me out of my misery, show us the rule (as it then stood).
