In the mid-80s Everton had one of the best football teams in Europe, and two key members of that team were the outstanding (and unconventional) goalkeeper Neville Southall, and captain Kevin Ratcliffe. At a recent corporate lunch Ratcliffe recollects:
"I agreed with Nev that whenever I forced a forward wide I wouldn't make a tackle and give a corner away because he was always likely to save. I did the same with Bobby [Mimms, reserve goalkeeper] when we played Real in a friendly and we were 4-0 down at half-time."
