Last summer I organised a conference on "Cultural Theory and Management", in memory of Dame Mary Douglas. The vision was entirely hers, I simply put it into effect and sadly she passed away before it was held. I was pleased to get Innovation - The European Journal of Social Science Research to produce a special edition containing inspired by the conference. It has just been published (Vol. 21 Issue 3).
Contributors include Mike Thompson, Gerry Mars and other leading lights in the world of Cultural Theory. My own contribution is called
Dealing with dissent: whistleblowing, egalitarianism, and the republic of the firm
Here's the abstract:
This article seeks to illuminate the phenomenon of whistleblowing (defined as “the unauthorized revelation of wrongdoing”) from the perspective of grid-group “cultural theory” and the capabilities theory of the firm. Stylized facts include a strong sense of group solidarity combined with a rejection of imposed regulations, and this suggests that whistleblowing is an egalitarian phenomenon. By adding an analytical framework to the many descriptive cases in the management literature, we can see why legislative and internal systems typically fail, and suggest ways to nourish a culture of dissent as a strategic advantage.
