We were given branded pens and notepaper. Possibly the coolest pen I've ever seen. It appeared to be a standard biro but when you twist it a hollow highlighter emerges around the nib. So you can highlight and annotate a text with the same pen! I went to the bookstore and asked if they sold them, but the cashier said, "sorry, they're from Executive Education, we don't know where they get them from".
It seems flippant that one of the first things to have an impact on me are the pens, but freebies are important. When we have recruitment fairs I pay close attention to the free gifts that companies bring. I still have a glowstick from Morgan Stanley, 2 mugs from Goldman Sachs, a miniture American Football from UBS, etc etc. They litter my office and each year I look forward to the goodies I'll pick up. They are an important marketing tool. This biro/highlighter is being used by pretty much everyone, and none of us had seen them before. Brilliant.
