Scott Beaulier wants to know what to do in London. A few thoughts:
- Tate Modern and Tate Britain are what they are - popular, busy, rarely inspirational but high quality. You can't really not visit Tate Modern, so make time for a coffee on the top floor and enjoy the best view of London
- Go to a public lecture - for example:
LSE Public Lectures and Events, Houghton Street, WC2A 2AE
RSA Events, John Adam Street, WC2N 6EZ
- For economists, the Bank of England museum is very good [Bank of England Museum, Threadneedle Street, EC2]
- For a night out, I haven't a clue. The only decent nights out I've had in London have been around Soho, but compared to a real city like Liverpool or Belgrade, it's far too pretentious generally. I'm sure there's good clubs in Camden, and Brixton, but I don't have local knowledge
- The markets are great - Borough market is a short stroll from Tate Modern along the South Bank, and you can get a mean lunch
- A pub crawl of Sam Smith's pubs is hard to beat
- I'm in the process of creating a walking tour, since I'm sure you could see Karl Marx's name placque at the British Museum (possibly even his grave in Highgate), Keynes' Bloomsbury residence, a few statues, the IEA - all could be done in an afternoon.
Given I've lived just outside London for over 3 years, the above list is pretty pathetic. The blockbusters (British Museum, Science Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Royal Academy) all go without saying. The sights (Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament) also. Any other ideas?
