After a traumatic evening involving an emergency run to the vets, it turns 9pm and there's nothing in the fridge. Given that I've ordered from Dominos before, I assume my details are all saved and it'll be quick and easy to get a delivery. No such luck. At the critical point, just when I think it's done and the 'arl chef is whipping a dodgy pizza from the freezer, Lloyds TSB "click safe" pops up wanting my password.
Problem is, I haven't used it for a few months, so I've obviously forgotten what it is. I try the password for my Mac. Incorrect. I try my password for gmail. Incorrect. I try my password for paypal. Incorrect. Aaargh. It now wants me to set a new password, but at least this gives me a change to use my new "uniform" password that I've used for everything since March 2010, and will hopefully soon be the only one I have to remember -
You've already used this password. Please select a different password
WTF? So here's the situation: I know you're not supposed to write down passwords, but I do. That doesn't solve the problem though, because when I need them, I'm not likely to have them to hand. So it has to be something that I'll remember. But I've got through so many "click safe" passwords that each time I need to come up with something progressively less memorable.
I've phoned the customer helpline, and now realise that the password will automatically reset if not prompted in a month. So there's no way of having a constant password. I believe some companies use this on their emails.
So here's my question: how on earth do people remember passwords that they routinely have to create afresh??
I thought I could just use a word, and then change the number depending on, say, the month. But then I'd need to remember when it was set. In short, I can't see any way forward. My current strategy is to hope that I use it so infrequently it doesn't matter that I reset it every time. Which sort of undermines the point of having a "password".
Any thoughts?
You have a Mac.. Use 1Password..

Stores them all securely in a safe, allows you to have very secure passwords (that you can't remember) and interacts with your browsers to gather and input them.
Good App.

1password is great but in my experience clicksafe (and verified by visa) are disaste zones.

I hate Clicksafe with a passion, to the extent that I refuse to do online business with any vendor that uses it. I'll either take my business elsewhere or order by phone instead when I see that vile window at the very end of the transaction. Being held in a queue is less hassle than going through the password reset rigmarole.
And on the phone, I *always* make a point of telling them what I think of Clicksafe.
I use Norton 360 for Windows as a password manager, and the way Clicksafe seems to be implemented is incompatible with the way it works.

Just to confirm - Did customer service really say your password expires after a month of inactivity, or have I misunderstood?
That would explain why it's seemingly rejected the valid password on the rare occasions I've remembered it.
Professionally, as a software tester, I think whoever made that design decision should be taken out and shot.

Correct - but not even inactivity, it automatically requests that your renew your password on a routine basis.
Having said that, I've remembered it on the last few occasions. I have a memorable word followed by a digit that increases whenever I need to reset it. I'm now on "2", and am evidently able to remember this.
