Monty's Dilemma

Rachel's just finished Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. There is an interesting puzzle that goes like this:

You are playing a game. In the game, there are three doors with prizes hidden behind them. One door hides a new car while the other two doors hide goats. If you pick the door with the car behind it, you win the car.

You pick a door. At this point the game host opens another of the doors, revealing a goat. Now the game host offers you the opportunity to change your pick to the other door.

Schizophrenia

Janet Frame, a chronicler of mental turmoil, died on January 29th, aged 79.
From the obituary section of the Economist.

Apparantly, she wrote, whilst looking out to sea

...the prospect of the world terrified me: a morass of despair, violence, death with a thin layer of glass spread upon the surface where Love, a tiny crab with pincers and rainbow shell, walked delicately ever sideways but getting nowhere.

I still haven't watched 'A Beautiful Mind' since I avoid the film version of any favourite book, lest I confuse the two in years to come. From what I've heard, it sentimentalises and excuses someone who was, for want of a better word, a bit of a shit.
Here is an interesting account of the film, as an introduction to schizophrenia.
If we ever will understand this disease, this seems to be the way to go.
